Remembering Robin Williams

You’re only given a little spark of madness, and if you lose that, you’re nothing.” – Robin Williams

Recently, the world was devastated to learn that iconic and well-revered actor/comedian Robin Williams had taken his own life, and personally, it had struck a cord much stronger than any other celebrity death. William’s roles were integral to popular culture from the late 1980’s to early 2000’s, which ensured that my generation had grown up with him as a prevalent and adored figure. We will forever remember and respect Robin Williams for the joy he brought to millions.

His top 5 movie roles include:

  1. Good Will Hunting (1997)

Good Will Hunting is an academy award-winning screenplay that centers on the internal struggle of the main character, Will Hunting (Matt Damon), and the destructive relationships he has with the people closest to him. Robin Williams, who also won an academy award for best supporting actor, is a fundamental part of the plot, playing Will Hunting’s therapist, Sean McGuire, who enables him to realise his potential and let go of the past. This is William’s greatest work because it is truly inspiring, and his passion for acting is evident in his heartfelt speeches.

  1. Aladdin (1992)

The ‘Aladdin’ thing – that’s not work; that’s just fun. Three days in the recording studio going mad, then the animators do all the work. Not a bad way to cash a large check, my friend.” – Robin Williams

Robin Williams has a very distinct voice, which many can recognise without prompting, and his largely ad-libbed voice work in 1992’s Aladdin is proof that he was destined to do voice work. Williams delivered many of his most funny and memorable lines, whilst capturing the hearts of audiences everywhere. Genie will forever be remembered as one of the most iconic Disney supporting characters due to Williams’s comic genius.

  1. Dead Poets Society (1989)

I think ‘Dead Poets’ was probably my favorite, just to get started with the idea of doing a movie that people treated as more than a movie.” – Robin Williams

Dead Poets Society is an inspirational drama about an English teacher at a private school who encourages students to love poetry and “seize the day”. It is definitely a rare classic that will be cherished for years to come, due to, largely, William’s portrayal of the motivating Mr. Keating, who you knew, really had a passion for teaching and encouraging pupils to follow their dreams. Everyone wants a teacher like Mr. Keating.

  1. The Fisher King (1991)

Gentlemen, haven’t we learned anything from the music of John Lennon? All we need is love.” – Robin Williams

The Fisher King is a heartfelt tale of redemption and simple human kindness, earning Williams his third Best Actor Oscar nomination in the process for his portrayal of the homeless Parry. Overall, it is a compelling story that showcases Williams as one of the defining actors of his time.

  1. Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)

Good Morning, Vietnam was a huge success for Williams that earned him his first Oscar nomination and Golden Globe. It is based on a true story, and sensationalizes the wartime experience of Armed Forces Radio DJ Adrian Cronauer. Combining humor with emotional drama in his attempts to endure the war, Williams’s character manages to build friendships and fight against his closed minded superiors in a performance that proves he is a great and talented actor.
